I have always believed that no particular practice makes you a good person. Following a religion, going to church, or idolizing a good person, doesn't make you a good person. Your personal actions and actually being a good person makes you a good person. It's not something you can just flick your wrist and acheive.
If you're not born with the traits of a good person, and you won't make a concious effort to become one, nothing is going to make you into a better individual. Just like you don't become a worse person by going out, you become a worse person because you either are one, or make very poor, bad choices for you and the people around you. A bad person puts others and themselves down, or even ruins something for someone else.
